Visit to Islamabad Chamber of Commerce

Made in Pakistan products for sustainable growth is the Social Action Project (SAP)  of students of BS-4, Department of Governance & Public Policy, Numl Univerity Islamabad under the supervision of Dr. Athar Rashid in which we will be promoting and aware people about  Made in Pakistan Label. The purpose behind this initiative is to encourage our youth to look for Pakistani local indigenous products for economic growth instead of going for expensive imported products.

By doing this we can boost our SMEs (Small-medium Enterprises) and that can play a key role in strengthening our Economy and eventually will help us in achieving Sustainable Economic Growth.
Team Members:
  • Muhammad Waleed Akram
  • Raja Wajahat
  • Aaliya Haroon
  • Farhat Bibi
Team Made in Pakistan for Sustainable Growth visited the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce & Industry where a meeting was set with Secretary-General Mr. Majid Shabbir at his office.

Team Made in Pakistan had a detailed discussion with him about how ICCI is playing its role in empowering. And how he sees the quality of products we are producing. We also told him about our initiative as well which he appreciate in the first place.

According to him:
It is very important for us to change our mindset and psychology. We have a strong inferiority complex towards our local production and manufacturing. We all usually prefer imported products over local products because we are tuned in such a way that our local products are not up to the mark.
He further mentioned that we produced some great quality products also but we do have some loopholes and flaws that need to be taken care of but that is not the whole story. First, we must need to start owing and embracing our local products and stop thinking of them as minors and lesser made.

He further added that it is important for us to develop an entrepreneurial mindset in our youth and educational institutes should play an important role in this regard because there is a big gap between what the market demands and what scale of education and skill-building we are offering to our youth. He said there is a dire need to fill this gap because youth is considered as the cream of any nation and it is our responsibility to provide youngsters with demanding skillsets and education that connects to the market demands.

Furthermore, he told us that youth is lacking interest in the Private sector over the government sector because of the job security and other perks and privileges in the government sector. This stereotypical behavior should be stopped and a conducive environment and opportunities should be created where people start taking interest in initiating their startups and businesses.
He also mentioned if we see developed countries they strictly encourage government jobs and encourage their youth in coming toward private practices and building their startup companies.

He also Briefs us that ICCI plays a key role in spreading awareness among our youth through different exhibitions, seminars, webinars, dialogues and workshops to encourage more and more people to come towards the private sector. They also plan to work with universities in building the registration process and connecting business ideas with investors and making the banking process easy which they are about to start soon. They are also suggesting policies and plans to The State Bank of Pakistan on this as well.

He told us that we are the first chamber in our whole country to win an International Award for Entrepreneurs Best Practices in Doha.
In the end, we thank him for his valuable time and consideration. We also presented him with our awareness brochure and took a picture with team members.

Youth for Community Policing

Here is the logo of our project, mentioned below;

Our project is related to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16(Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

Community policing is defined as the strategy of police to develop relationship with community members with the systematic use of partnership and problem solving techniques in order to reduce crime and social disorder from the society. It is a shift from traditional policing in which arrest and investigation was the main objective behind toward community policing in which society is the main priority.

The nature of crimes is changing throughout the world due to development of technology. Many new crimes are emerging and police department is undergoing changes as well .In a Pakistani context, formation of different community police centre’s and Aman committees at regional, district and tehsil levels, aims to solve issues regarding minor crimes with the  cooperation of police and community members. It is a positive step.

Few Initiatives were taken by Pakistan:

In Pakistan few initiatives that had been taken in past to encourage the community policing on a larger scale are;

Community policing initiative was firstly taken by ex-additional inspector of police (AIG) Mr. Sarmad Saeed in Rahim Yar Khan District, where he was appointed as a District Police Officer DPO in year 2002. During his tenure, he established at least 800 community centers for engagement of police with citizen by different constituting committees. As the result of this initiative crime reduced by 50% in district but unluckily he got transferred in 2003. The chapter of community policing was also culminated along with his transfer.

      Need:

The need of community policing arises from the fact that the citizen do not have goodwill toward police. Most of the people in Pakistan are not aware of certain police practices. We are taking these initiatives to educate people, particularly youth because youth is building block of any country. Through this project, we are trying to create a mutual interest and cooperation between police and community.

Objectives:

  • ·         Establish healthy relationship between youth and police.
  • ·         To educate the youth about the concept of community policing.
  • ·         Awaring people about the initiatives already taken by police related to community policing.
  • ·         Creating soft image of police among people.
  • ·         To explore the practices and cultures of police as, how they respond in securing women and          men in local community.
  • ·         Build trust and sense of safety among the community members.
  • ·         Reduce the fear of police and increase coordination among police and community.

Continuity:

Our vision regarding the project is that we will try to do our best. This SAP is totally relevant to community and it would be accomplished through more and more community participation. We are a group of 4 members who are working on this project. We know how much it’s important for our society to develop a friendly environment between Police and Community. Starting this project with the hope to develop a positive attitude of people towards Community Policing and its importance, we have decided to work on this project after the semester as well. Proper websites along with blogs and social media platforms will be formed to make information reachable.

Assess Your Digital Skills

How much time of the day are you spending online? How would you rate your digital productivity?

Pakistan is facing a digital skills shortage. Our workforce is unable to meet the rapidly changing, technological future. There is not a shortage of skilled labor but a skill mismatch between the person’s potential and skill. Your digital proficiency will lead you to digital productivity. You need to develop your digital skills by reflecting upon your digital capabilities.

What are Digital Skills?

Digital skills are the abilities required to use digital technologies. The skills used to run digital devices, access, evaluate, create, and share digital content. These skills are important to work in the fast-evolving digital world.

How Digitally Capable are you?

Digital capability means the extent of adaptation to digital culture and infrastructure. JISC Digital Capability Framework highlights the six key areas of digital capability.

1. ICT Proficiency (functional skills)

2. Information, data, and media literacies (critical skills)

3. Digital creation, problem-solving, and innovation (creative skills)

4. Digital communication, collaboration, and participation (participation)

5. Digital learning and development (development)

6. Digital identity and wellbeing. (self-actualizing)

Not getting into details of any of these, else you will not continue reading the blog further.

Hopefully, you would have accessed your digital capabilities in your mind. Now let's step forward to evaluate your digital skills.

Digital Skills Checklist:

a. Digital tools for working incorporate your competency with the system and digital devices.

b. Digital ways of working hold account for digital communication, collaboration, and analysis.

c. Digital ways of thinking include digital creativity, innovation, and problem-solving.

d. Our social and ethical responsibility is living in the digital age, digital safety, and security.

From entry-level digital skills to advanced levels digital skills, it is a lifelong learning process leading to self-fulfillment at each level. The more step ahead you are on the list, the more chances of excelling in an irreversible process.

Enough assessments for today. There are so many components of digital skills always finding room for development. Believe it or not,

"In the age of the machine, people matter more than ever."

Higher Education and Digital Skills

Universities matter but there exists education without institutions. Education is not bound to well-established institutions only. It is free to capture as per your potential. Superseding various levels of development, from vocational and technical skills we have shifted to E-skills. E-skills are demand-driven skills on the national and international facet. Think of how your grandfathers and their grandfathers surpassed their livelihood. Jobs were at their basic level at that time. The job entrance level gained pace in the 18th century with urbanization and industrial disruption. Today Industry Revolution 5.0 is much more than automation, efficiency, and effectiveness. It is based upon your collaborative human, social, and digital needs.

Higher Education Institutions are the most prestigious institutions. The revolving trends of the job market have created a visible gap between the employer and the graduate. Today higher education is based on theoretical aspects incompatible and irrelevant to industrial desires. They are training students for jobs that are disappearing. Where are the new skills and new knowledge? Students are unfamiliar with the operation and application of the knowledge gained. They do not know the use of a common technology device. They cannot access if they do possess a certain skill set or not. Their problem-solving and critical thinking skills are immobile. They lack visualization and innovation. There is always a set of unemployed people who are unable and not capable to acquire a certain job because of their poor knowledge and competence.

Can you consider such a graduate a digital citizen?

An inexperienced graduate without any knowledge about innovation and creativity skills, interpersonal skills, technological skills, problem-solving skills, personalized learning, self-paced learning, collaborative learning, inclusive learning, and student-driven learning, cannot be considered a Global Digital Citizen. The Computer Science Reality is nothing without Collective Social Responsibility. One needs to escape the mindset that machines will take over humans. No machine can overrule humans only if the biological ecosystem surrenders before the digital ecosystem. Live with the augmented and virtual realities. Adapt the technology do not abandon it.
