Meeting with Director (Transport) NUML
On 3rd December 2021, we had a meeting with the Director (Transport) of NUML, Islamabad, Major (R) Ijaz. The purpose of our meeting was to get the data about Numl’s vehicle petroleum cost per month. Mr. Ijaz is really a nice and cooperative personality, who gave us all the data about the monthly costs and budget allocated to the transport.
Our team also briefed the director regarding our project and our aim and desire to shift our university transportation system to EV's. So that NUML may become a smart and environmentally friendly institute.
Findings:
The cost of fossil fuels in the transportation system of the university is very high and it can be reduced by adopting EV's in the system.
Data collection from
students:
(By Random Sampling technique)
Team
Numl EV Club also collected data from the students of the NUML by random
sampling. The purpose was, to know about the monthly petroleum expenses of
their bikes and cars, the findings were:
The
average number of bikes in Numl=1600
Petroleum
cost per bike for the month=500
The
total cost of petroleum=6500000/- PKR approximately
Conclusion:
By keeping in view the above-collected data, we can see that the cost of petroleum is very high and with the recent surge in petroleum prices, it is also very depressing for the users (especially students in the Higher Education Institutes (HEI's) in Pakistan. It is important to note that that the amount which university and students spend monthly on their transport is quite high. Moreover, the modes of transportation used has an environmental cost as well.
According to our project findings, it is the dire need of universities and students to shift to electric vehicles (EV's), by doing so the students will be able to save a lot of money and help in preserving our environment. Furthermore, the university will also be able to reduce their transportation expenses as Electric vehicles are less costly and require little or no maintenance at times. Besides cost reduction, the environmental impact and carbon footprints will be reduced considerably. Our project also suggests an Electric Vehicle Policy (EVP) for NUML (preliminary draft is ready and suggestions, consultations on the policy are taken), and all Higher Education Institutes (HEI's) across should implement the same. We also request Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan to help and guide us in this regard.
