Social Action as a Civic Initiative: The Role of Higher Education Institutes (HEI's)

Higher Education Institutes (HEI's) play a central role in knowledge production and dissemination. Universities are considered as centers of research and teaching in any society. Along with teaching and research their civic role in the society is very important. Therefore universities or higher education institutes (HEI's) play a key role in producing and disseminating knowledge through their research and teaching. Moreover, their civic role is equally important, and many universities across globe have been very active in this area.

There is no denial in the fact that the graduates produced out of these institutes are more likely to vote, volunteer, and become engaged in society. Their higher education experience can be formative in developing this sense of active citizenship as they become part of different community groups, charities, schools and many other organizations. They also work together with their schools, colleges and universities on civic initiatives that support lifelong learning, community development, regeneration of neighbor hoods, arts, culture, environment, health and wellbeing.

There are multiple possible topics of community and civic engagement for students that may include climate change, inclusive and quality education, gender equality, peace, justice and strong institutions, sustainable cities, communities and clean energy, human rights, inequality reductions, green energy, health and well-being and so on.
