I speak different regional/local languages of Pakistan (Pashto, Hindko, Punjabi, Sarakai, etc) and international languages including English, French (basic), and Turkish (basic). While growing up in Pakistan, I got exposure to English (Language, Literature, and Linguistics) and French language at NUML while doing my Bachelor in Modern Languages. Since then, I have kept working on English as it is an official language of Pakistan and as it is well known that the English language had become a unique language in the world. It is also a fact, there are still many people in the world who do not know the English language. English is one such connecting link in today's world that can not be ignored.
Learning a language opens up doors of multiple opportunities
In today's era, the basic knowledge of a single or more languages has become crucial. Language has become the major tool of communication between countries, cultural groups, community engagement, various companies and organizations, and friends. Those who speak one language, live only in one world. Learning and knowing a new language is a fascinating experience. It is the ability to acquire and use complex systems of communication, particularly the human ability to do so, and a language is any specific example of such a system.
Furthermore, learning a language facilitates opportunities to develop ones listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express oneself with full confidence.
Bachelors in Modern Languages as an opportunity to learn different languages
I did my Bachelors in Modern Languages (BML) from the National University of Modern Languages in 2003. This undergraduate degree was no doubt a new degree program of its kind in Pakistan. The program was designed to provide a foundational education in one or more languages, as well as in literature and linguistic theory. The programs also included cultural studies courses, in which students learn more about the cultures and literature associated with specific languages taught during the program.
It was fascinating to study Modern Languages during this program as it provided me with an opportunity for both practical training in written and spoken language and along with an extensive introduction to literature and thought written in modern languages (English and French). Through practical exposure provided by our able instructors, we learned how to write and speak the language(s) fluently. During the course of study, you can study a broad range of literature, or focus your studies on any period from the medieval to the present day.
NUML is one of the premiers in teaching different oriental and occidental languages as well as a number of emerging disciplines. Initially established as an institute in 1969 it was upgraded as a university in 2000 by the Government of Pakistan (GOP).
