                                           INTRODUCTION TO NUML SDG SCOUTS

IDEA OF SUSTAINABILITY & SDGs:

The idea of sustainability revolves around the concept of Equity. It means providing and managing

resources according to the need.

FULFILLING THE NEEDS OF THE PRESENT GENERATION WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE NEEDS OF FUTURE GENERATIONS.

Sustainable development refers to planning city growth and economic development to avoid the

depletion of natural resources.

The following are the stakeholders for SDGs:

• Governments

• Businesses

• Media

• Higher Educational Institutions

• Local NGOs

WHO ARE WE?

We are from the Governance and Public Policy department, currently studying in the fourth semester of

our undergraduate program. We are a total of 10 members in our group who are determined to spread

awareness regarding Sustainable Development Goals. We are a part of Numl SDGs Scouts. We are

working to promote the 2030 Agenda among our youth and to attain sustainability in social, economic,

and environmental aspects by 2030.

PURPOSE:

Numl SDGs Scouts are a part of the Social Action Project supervised by Dr. Athar Rashid, Assistant

professor GPP, NUML. We aim to:

• Educate

• Aware

• Train youth regarding Sustainable Development Goals.

 MAKE ALL AWARE OF SUSTAINABILITY, SDGs, and LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND.

 

NEED FOR SDGs SCOUTS:

As the world is progressing so rapidly, so are our harmful activities. Human beings are contributing a

prime part to the destruction of the environment. So, it is a requirement for a third-world country like

ours to make a considerable effort regarding sustainable development goals.

Recent floods in Pakistan are a significant example for us. If we don't start working on achieving

sustainability so far, it will become impossible for us to survive environmentally, socially, and

economically. Pakistan is the 5th most populated country in the world, lacks planning and statistics

because, as a nation, we are never concerned about sustainability. So, it is necessary to initiate

campaigns like SDGs Scouts.

WHY ARE NUML SDGs SCOUTS FOCUSING YOUTH?

Nature has given us many things like fossil fuels, water, and greenery. They should be used, not abused.

64% of the total population of Pakistan consists of youth. We believe,

The power of youth is the commonwealth of the entire world. The faces of young people are the faces

of our past, present, and future. No segment in the society can match the power, idealism, enthusiasm,

and courage of young people.

Involving youth is crucial for the success of the 2030 Agenda. The National University of Modern

Languages have, without exception, been so active in engaging youth for the better development of

society.

The SDGs are universal goals for all people and are inherently global. Learning about these initiatives

helps young students develop insights into critical issues, such as how to end poverty and hunger, lack of access to clean water, electricity and gender equality, etc.

OUR FOCUS:

The focus of NUML SDGs SCOUTS GROUP 1 is concerned with SDG 1 TO SDG 5.

 These include:

1. NO POVERTY.

2. ZERO HUNGER.

3. GOOD HEALTH & WELL-BEING.

4. PROMOTE QUALITY EDUCATION.

5. GENDER EQUALITY & WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT.

In this regard, we visited numerous institutes on the premises of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Characteristics of these visits and activities have been mentioned in the upcoming blogs by our group

members.

NUML CAMPUS DRIVE BY SDGs SCOUTS GROUP 1 (M):

We started working on this project on September 19'2022 and ended the campaign on October 05'2022.

We concluded this drive by initiating two phases.

PHASE-I:

In the first phase of our campus drive inside NUML, we visited various language departments and

interviewed the faculty members out there about the situation of SDGs in their respective countries and

regions. We visited the following five departments and surveyed there:

1. Japanese Department.

2. German Department.

3. English Department.

4. Korean Department.

5. French Department.

Following are the questions which we asked:

Q1. Do they know about SDGs? What is the status of SDGs in their respective countries?

Q2. When did they start implementing Sustainable Development Goals in their regions?

Q3. How much awareness do they have of the 2030 Agenda and its indicators?

Q4. What is their progress on SDG #01,02,03,04 and 05?

The information which we get from various professors is as under:

Japan started adopting and implementing the 2030 Agenda in the post-war period, right after World

War II. According to the professor, they emphasize building the nation first. Japan had set some

standards and goals to achieve sustainability in the region.

• They worked free of cost for the nation. They promoted Quality Education. Their literacy rate is

100%. They also promoted industrialization. Industrialization by promoting family businesses is a

significant achievement. Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are all examples of the success story.

• They are also working tremendously on Sustainable Development Goal #03, whereas Pakistan

recently introduced health card services, Japan is way ahead of us in getting stability. They

introduced a Health card facility about 30-35 years ago.

• While talking about SDG #05, Gender Equality, there was much discrimination earlier. Japan

was purely a male-dominated society. Eventually, the situation is now getting better for women

also.

• Also, the fact is that they are achieving rapid growth and sustainability in digitalization and

technology. This was all that we got to know about sustainable planning in Japan. No doubt they

have little to no flaws in their system of sustainability.

Next, we visited English Department. We met Dr. Rabia Amir from Columbia University. She is doing her research and working on the 2030 Agenda of Pakistan.

• According to Dr. Rabia, the SDGs exist only on paper in European countries, and they are making

little to no effort to achieve sustainability. European countries are creating hurdles for

themselves and for other regions of the world also.

• She recommended we watch a documentary, Algor, and suggested us a book also, An

Inconvenient Truth to get an insight into the situation of SDGs in Europe.

At last, visited the German Department where we met Dr. Sehran Mushtaq Chaudhry. It was a treat

meeting him. He emphasized educating the youth of Pakistan about SDGs.

• Talking with him we got to know that the Germans are the most aware people regarding SDGs

on a domestic level.

• If we talk about the climate protection of the region, then they have a system of recycling

garbage separately. They filter garbage. For example, they have installed different categories of

bins like separate bins for plastic trash, glass, paper, and other materials.

• But we cannot deny the fact that they are causing trouble for neighboring countries with their

activities. For example, they send their used old pieces of machinery and vehicles to other

countries which pollute the environment.

PHASE-II:

In the second phase of our Campus Drive inside NUML, we visited overall departments, sitting areas,

students, and teachers and educated them regarding Sustainable Development Goals. We initiated an

awareness campaign through Campus Drive on our relevant SDGs. It is unfortunate that most of the

students didn't know about the 2030 Agenda, but we have carried out an effective campaign so far with

better outcomes.

OUTCOMES & CONCLUSION:

During this Awareness Campaign, we interacted with senior faculty members and students from

various departments. This activity allowed us to embellish our communication skills. Through the

interactive sessions with the professors, we get to know more about Sustainable Development Goals. If

we talk about the students, they have little to no knowledge about SDGs. We educated them well and

the outcomes were positive.

NUML SDGs scouts are determined to do more exceptional work for this cause further. We are

specifically very thankful to our project supervisor Dr. Athar Rashid who provided us with the

opportunity to establish this platform.

The NUML SDG SCOUTS GROUP 2 Visit to Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad

 

Introduction:

The NUML SDG SCOUTS is group of students from the department of Governance and Public Policy at NUML Islamabad. NUML SDG SCOUTS are working on SOCIAL ACTION PROJECTS regarding UN sustainable development Goals. To fight the global problems of humanity, the United Nations has adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To achieve these goals, it is necessary that future decision-makers and stakeholders in society consider these goals to be important. So to achieve these 17 goals the global community needs to work together with partnerships. We as NUML SDG SCOUTS are proudly contributing to this good cause to transform our world in the supervision of DR ATHAR RASHID.

QAU VISIT

On our second outside university drive we visited the prestigious and one of the most highly ranked university of Pakistan ‘’The Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad’’. There we visited the department of ‘’Quaid I Azam school of management sciences’’ and successfully conducted a session with the students of 1^st semester of BS Public Administration and Governance. It was 1hour long awareness session in which we presented our Ideas, knowledge and information in the form of presentation regarding the SDGs. At the end of our presentation we also conducted a 15 minutes question answer session to engage the students and to give them a proper understanding of the SDGs.

We also conducted awareness walks and distributed brochures inside the department of management sciences.

We made many students and a teacher as NUML SDG SCOUTS ‘’SDG AMBASSADORS’’ from the department of Quad I Azam school of management sciences, QAU ISLAMABD.

WHO WE ARE?

Hello Everyone! We are ‘NUML SDG SCOUTS’ students of BS Public Administration and Governance GPP Department NUML ISLAMABAD, we are working on social action projects regarding the UN 17 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS which is under the supervision of Assistant Professor DR Athar Rashid. We are a group of 10 members and our group is working of 5 SDGs (SDG 6-10). These SDGs are as under:

WHAT ARE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS?

 

The SDGs are collection of 17 Goals designed by the United Nations in 2015 and are expected to be achieved by 2030.  These SDGs are to action to end poverty and inequality, protect the planet, and ensure that all people enjoy health, justice and prosperity. The core elements of these Sustainable Development Goals are Economic Growth, Social Inclusion and Environmental Protection.

OUR AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

 

The main aim and focus of The NUML SDG SCOUTS is to ‘’Aware, Educate and Train the youth regarding the UN sustainable development goals’’

As a student what the best we can contribute to SDGs is Awareness. We have to aware the youth that how they can contribute to put their share on this good cause to transform the world. Together with partnership we can achieve what we are looking for.

So far, we NUML SDG SCOUTS GROUP 2 have visited two prestigious institutions in Islamabad to spread awareness regarding the UN SDGs.

PROGRESS  

On our first outside university drive, we NUML SDG SCOUTS GROUP 2 visited QAED SCHOOL H-9 ISLAMABAD. We interacted with the teachers and students of QAED and successfully conducted a productive and informative awareness campaign in the institution. Approximately 50+ students from class 9^th and 10^th with their respective teachers attended the session. We shared our knowledge and information with the students regarding the SDGs that how as a student and a youth they can contribute for this good cause to transform the world. We distributed brochures among the students and conducted an awareness walk inside the institution.

 

MEETING 

We also successfully conducted a brief meeting with the Head and teachers of QAED institution. In this meeting we discussed about that how the successful implications of these SDGs in our country will put a positive impact on the Environmental, Social and Economic condition of our country.

Appreciation Letter;

 

The whole staff principal, teachers and students of the QAED Institution H-9 Islamabad appreciated our work and they ensured us for future collaborations as well. We got an appreciation letter from the institute and the support and appreciation from QAED Institute boosted our confidence and we thanked them on behalf of the UNIVERSITY for their Facilitation.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

 Before going into detail let's introduce sustainable development goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others and that development must balance social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Countries have committed to prioritizing progress for those who are furthest behind. The SDGs are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls. The creativity, know-how, technology, and financial resources from all of society are necessary to achieve the SDGs in every context.

Pakistan's progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Despite Covid -19 and economic instability, Pakistan ranked 134 out of 193 on a global level which shows the efforts of Pakistan toward the SDGs.

 

Aviation Saviors' little efforts toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

For the achievement of SDGs, most of the responsibilities fall on the shoulders of the citizens of Pakistan you and me because without our support it will be difficult to achieve the SDGs. So what is our contribution toward SDGs? Our team of aviation Saviors is working to educate students and the community about birds strike and proper waste disposal. Waste is the root cause of many issues. and it has many harmful effects on human health. So SDGs goal number 3 good health and well-being

 is very important because if any society is healthy then it will work more productively and can contribute to the economy of any country. So The Waste which is not properly managed, especially excreta and other liquid and solid waste from households is a serious health hazard and leads to the spread of infectious diseases. 

Unattended waste lying around attracts flies, birds, rats, and other creatures that in turn spread disease. Normally it is the wet waste that decomposes and releases a bad odor. This leads to unhygienic conditions and thereby to a rise in health problems. Plastic waste is another cause of ill health That’s whys we are educating people about the side effects of garbage/offal/animal remains and taking steps to manage and control waste disposal near the airport and urging people to keep the vicinity of airports clean by disposing waste at designated dumping points in an environment-friendly manner. That avoids attracting birds. And it will also protect us from many harmful diseases so by this we are contributing toward the sustainable development goals (SDGs) goal Number 3 good health and wellbeing. And  awareness is the first step for localizing the sustainable development goals. It is your responsibility as a citizen of Pakistan and it is also a responsibility of mine as a citizen of Pakistan to play our role as responsible citizens for the progress of our country.

Who are Aviation Savior’s || Social Action Project || G&PP || NUML

Aviation Saviors are Group of  Students of the National University of Modern Languages Islamabad (NUML) studying in BS Public Administration and Governance, Department of Governance and Public policy 7th semester. This Project is under the supervision of Dr. Athar Rashid Assistant Professor / Supervisor of Social Action Projects. (NUML) and we are doing this birds strike awareness project with the collaboration of Islamabad International Airport(IIAP) Pakistan  Civil Aviation Authority. 

About  our Social Action Project || NUML || G&PP

Bird strike is a serious threat to flight safety in the aviation industry and it poses threat not only to the aircraft, its passengers, and nearby surroundings but also causes flight delays and huge expenses to airlines. So that’s why In this project, we will create awareness about bird strikes. Educate the families who are living near the vicinity of airports about bird Strike and urge people to keep the vicinity of airports clean by disposing of waste in a manner that avoids attracting birds. The bird Strike is a very big issue in Pakistan's aviation sector. Bird Strike is the major contributor to Aircraft disasters and damages. There were 17 total birds’ hits 11 Suspected and 6 confirmed in 2022. The highest bird strikes were reported from May to September. According to the report of the civil aviation authority (CAA), This project will help Pakistan aviation to control the increasing population of birds near airports.

 

Objectives:

• Creating awareness about bird strikes all over Pakistan, especially in the cities where airports are located.
• Taking measurable steps to manage and control waste disposal near the airport and urging people to keep the vicinity of airports clean by disposing of waste in a manner that avoids attracting birds. 

Activities included in the project

• Creating awareness about bird strikes all over Pakistan and especially near airports. 
• Educating people about birds strikes its effects and causes.
• Bird strikes awareness programs in schools, colleges, and universities of Pakistan.
• Taking measurable steps to manage and control waste disposal near airports. 
• Creating awareness at the Mawashi Mandi during Eid-ul-Azha days.
• Creating awareness about citizen participation in controlling the bird's strikes. 
• Online awareness campaigns, and meetings with youth to control waste disposal near Airports.

How will this project benefit your community

The Waste that is not properly managed, especially excreta and other liquid and solid waste from households and the community, is a serious health hazard and leads to the spread of infectious diseases. Unattended waste lying around attracts flies, rats, and other creatures that in turn spread disease. Normally it is the wet waste that decomposes and releases a bad odor. This leads to unhygienic conditions and thereby to a rise in health problems. Plastic waste is another cause of ill health. Thus excessive solid waste that is generated should be controlled by taking certain preventive measures. So that’s why it is very important to manage waste disposal to protect the community from harmful effects. 

 Need:

The bird population near airports is increasing day by day. Bird strike is a serious threat to flight safety in the aviation industry and it poses threat not only to the aircraft, its passengers, and nearby surroundings but also causes flight delays and huge expenses to airlines. That's why this awareness campaign is needed to control the increasing population of Birds and To control and manage the increasing waste disposal near the vicinity of airports. 

 

Outcomes:

• The families who are living near airports must be aware of Bird strikes. 
• The families who are living near airports Must ensure cleanness in their area. 

·         The students who are living near the airport must be educated about bird Strikes and the role of citizens to control waste disposal near airport areas.

• The concerned stakeholder must perform their duties to make sure areas near airports are neat and clean.
• There must be proper management of waste near airports.
