Questions asked in the Webinar:

The participants and our team members asked different questions like;
  •  Is community playing a role in community policing in Pakistan?
  • Why community don't trust the police?
  • Does the role of community is more important than police in community policing?
  • Does political intervention damage the image of police?
  • Why police doesn't arrest the mafias, mastermind of crimes and aresst the small criminals( theif, etc)?
According to our guest speaker the main issue of police in Pakistan is political intervention, lack of police reforms and lack of technology.

Here is the logo of our project, mentioned below;

Our project is related to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16(Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).

Community policing is defined as the strategy of police to develop relationship with community members with the systematic use of partnership and problem solving techniques in order to reduce crime and social disorder from the society. It is a shift from traditional policing in which arrest and investigation was the main objective behind toward community policing in which society is the main priority.

 The nature of crimes is changing throughout the world due to development of technology. Many new crimes are emerging and police department is undergoing changes as well .In a Pakistani context, formation of different community police centre’s and Aman committees at regional, district and tehsil levels, aims to solve issues regarding minor crimes with the  cooperation of police and community members. It is a positive step.

Few Initiatives were taken by Pakistan:

In Pakistan few initiatives that had been taken in past to encourage the community policing on a larger scale are;

      Community policing initiative was firstly taken by ex-additional inspector of police (AIG) Mr. Sarmad Saeed in Rahim Yar Khan District, where he was appointed as a District Police Officer DPO in year 2002. During his tenure, he established at least 800 community centers for engagement of police with citizen by different constituting committees. As the result of this initiative crime reduced by 50% in district but unluckily he got transferred in 2003. The chapter of community policing was also culminated along with his transfer.

      Need:

The need of community policing arises from the fact that the citizen do not have goodwill toward police. Most of the people in Pakistan are not aware of certain police practices. We are taking these initiatives to educate people, particularly youth because youth is building block of any country. Through this project, we are trying to create a mutual interest and cooperation between police and community.

Objectives:

  • ·         Establish healthy relationship between youth and police.
  • ·         To educate the youth about the concept of community policing.
  • ·         Awaring people about the initiatives already taken by police related to community policing.
  • ·         Creating soft image of police among people.
  • ·         To explore the practices and cultures of police as, how they respond in securing women and          men in local community.
  • ·         Build trust and sense of safety among the community members.
  • ·         Reduce the fear of police and increase coordination among police and community.

Continuity:

Our vision regarding the project is that we will try to do our best. This SAP is totally relevant to community and it would be accomplished through more and more community participation. We are a group of 4 members who are working on this project. We know how much it’s important for our society to develop a friendly environment between Police and Community. Starting this project with the hope to develop a positive attitude of people towards Community Policing and its importance, we have decided to work on this project after the semester as well. Proper websites along with blogs and social media platforms will be formed to make information reachable.
